Dealing with Hroggar[edit]
"Confrontation can be avoided by breaking in to Alva's house when he isn't there, or by using a Calm spell on him. You can also run out of the house if he catches you there. Once you exit the house he'll stop following."
There's a much easier way to avoid confrontation with Hroggar than dodging/calming him. Just sell him some firewood at some point before you reach this stage of the quest. This will raise his disposition towards you enough so that, even when you enter Alva's home and he's present, he won't be hostile. He'll sound hostile in that he'll keep saying "I won't let you hurt Alva!" but he won't attack.174.0.115.201 10:44, 30 October 2012 (GMT)
The Notes and Bugs section.[edit]
As far as I can tell, all the notes seem relevant and provide useful information that may be overlooked. It's rather wordy but I vote it be kept intact. Ditto with the bugs section though I'm a bit fuzzy on the format and requirements. Sniffles (talk) 10:52, 28 February 2013 (GMT)
- Regarding the Bug where Lallette is found on the hill and not near the coffin. Try sneaking and using a bow, If it triggers a kill scene with the arrow, this will kill her and proceed with the quest. 3:16 18 March 2013 (Pacific Time) — Unsigned comment by OrcTank (talk • contribs) at 22:17 on 18 March 2013 (GMT)

- Also regarding this, it may be just a waiting game. I found her on the hill, visible but no collision. My blade went right through her and even attempting to pick her pocket didn't activate her as a container but just dialogue (not a menu, she just asked if I needed something, ect.) However I noticed that the coffin was also silent despite it being 7pm. I was able to turn her hostile by Unrelenting Forcing her, but I still couldn't hit her (she could hit me). At 7:50, Lalette turned invisible but she doesn't always and I couldn't reproduce this after the first time (I reloaded when she did it - may be related to aggroing her and then getting out of combat). At 8pm, the coffin finally responded (asking me to get rid of Laelette). Checking on Laelette confirmed she was now interactable. I picked her pocket then stabbed her in the back. It took her 11 minutes to walk from her place on the hill to Helgi's coffin. I think that covers about everything. Vainamoinen -Talk -Stuff 05:32, 3 March 2014 (GMT)
Return to Morthal's Jarl (section)[edit]
"This allows the Dragonborn to become Thane of Morthal if Hearthfire is installed."
I became Thane of Morthal and I don't have Hearthfire or any other DLC. Is this saying something else, if so it's not clear what? — Unsigned comment by 96.11.208.201 (talk) at 04:32 on 4 March 2013 (GMT)
- I guess that is referring to the bug where the Jarl sometimes doesn't recognize the PC efforts and the quest never gets completed. Sniffles (talk) 20:56, 4 March 2013 (GMT)
Alva's journal[edit]
Would it be a good idea to add a page for Alva's journal? Nemo (talk) 06:59, 23 May 2013 (GMT)
- It can be found here and is linked from the article in the detailed walkthrough. Hope that helps! — ABCface◥ 18:02, 23 May 2013 (GMT)
Benor Came Back[edit]
Before I started "Laid to Rest" I brought Benor to Delphine to become a blade, however when I started the part of the quest that has all the townspeople going with you to Movath's Lair he showed back up in town wearing blades armor but still trying to hold his axe (now missing) even though he was wearing a Blade's Sword. Level Suggestion?[edit]
Why do we have this? Movarth's Lair might be level 6, but Movarth himself has a minimum level of 14. Besides, there's no reason a level 1 character wouldn't be able to clear the dungeon. If we're going to be adding "suggested levels", the reasoning should be explained in a note or in the main text, not in some arbitrary entry at the very top of the page. —Legoless (talk) 18:16, 18 July 2013 (GMT)
- That is why it is under the "suggested level" and not the "required level" parameter. It isn't an arbitrary level, it is the minimum level of enemy you will encounter. All dungeons (that have one) have a minimum level set in the summary table. This is also a minimum level as there are always a few over-leveled enemies to fight, including the "boss" enemy. I don't see the reasoning for removing a helpful suggestion, someone comes to this quest at level 1 and struggles, they wonder why, they look up the wiki, they see the suggestion and come to the conclusion that they should level up a bit before trying again. Otherwise they do the same, come to the wiki, then make post on the talk page complaining that this quest is giving them trouble and asking why. A simple helpful suggestion is not detrimental to the page. How would you not understand "It is suggested you are level 6 for this quest." anyway? Speaking to Innkeeper Necessary?[edit]
Regarding this edit, I'm wondering if it is actually necessary to speak with the innkeeper. In my last two playthroughs to complete this quest, I tried talking to a number of townspeople to get the rumor needed to activate the jarl's dialogue, and couldn't find anyone who gave dialogue options about it until going to the local innkeeper, Jonna. I distinctly remember being annoyed by this. Having seen this recent edit and remembering my annoyance, I took a look through CSList for related dialogue. The only lines I'm finding which seem to actually be connected to the quest involve either the jarl, steward, or Jonna, with this exception. In particular, this dialogue seems to be key, which definitely involves the innkeeper, and can only be heard before stage 20 (the variable StopHouseRumor_var
is set to 1, according to the script fragment stuff in CSList). Stage 20 also happens to be when you get the objective to talk to the jarl, according to CSList and this quest page. I had to ask a few questions to understand the little bit I do get about how this works (thanks Vely), and I'm definitely no CK expert by any means, but I think this is worth looking into further.
On a somewhat related note, an anonymous user changed the quest giver information in the quest header to include Jonna over a year ago, and while the edit was never patrolled before falling off the patrol queue, it has remained on the page to this day.
So, anyone willing to do some in-game testing (trying to get the objective to speak to the jarl by speaking to every single NPC in town, one by one) and/or delve further into the CK data to shed some more light on this? Testing in game would involve reloading any time you do get the objective from an NPC, so you can continue to check the other NPCs until every NPC in town has been checked. I've already completed this quest on my current playthroughs, so I won't be checking myself any time soon. Also, I'm not sure if/how a jarl replacement would affect this, but we can probably focus on this bit for now, and maybe check into that later if needed. — ABCface◥ 03:21, 19 August 2013 (GMT)
- If you look at your your exception, you'll see the condition that the person has to be in the guard faction. Testing in game, as soon as I'd been close enough to the house to get the quest to stage 10, the guards all had the topic available, so no need for the innkeeper. – Robin Hood (talk) 20:30, 19 August 2013 (GMT)
- Yeah, I did see that condition for the exception, but when I did the quest the last time, talking to the guards didn't give me anything related dialogue-wise. Do you know if any other NPCs give dialogue which triggers the objective, or is it solely the innkeeper and the guards? If it is only the innkeeper or guards, it should be noted on the page. — ABCface◥ 20:39, 19 August 2013 (GMT)
- You probably hadn't been close enough to the house to trigger it. That's the very first step, which I've updated on the page. It looks like only Jonna and the guards can do it. The guards are the fastest, cuz Jonna blabbers on about a bunch of things before directing you to the jarl. – Robin Hood (talk) 20:47, 19 August 2013 (GMT)
- I went inside the burned out house, so I had to have been close enough, but who knows why I had that weirdness. Anyway, thanks for looking into this, I guess we should also update the quest header to reflect that the quest giver is technically either a local guard or Jonna as well. I'll get to it in a bit if you or no one else has yet. Thanks for the checks! — ABCface◥ 20:52, 19 August 2013 (GMT)

Thonnir[edit]
When the player suggests to Thonnir that Alva might be a vampire, he fiercely defends her reputation. Why? What is Alva to him? Wasn't the whole plan for Alva to seduce the guards? Thonnir isn't one of the guards. Additionally, he's a fresh face to the mourning club. If there was a possibility(hypothetically, after all we know Alva did it) that his wife was turned and indirectly killed when she became violent, wouldn't Thonnir be all up on that business regardless of who was suggested to have done the deed? It's easier for a person to believe that someone close to them was murdered than it is to accept that they died for seemingly no reason at all. Does this bother anyone else?97.125.249.127 09:59, 25 September 2014 (GMT)

Dialogue weirdness?[edit]
I had a few things which seemed weird to me, but I dunno if they qualify as bugs, per se. The first was, after giving the journal to the Jarl, the quest page implies that I'm to get a reward at that point, but I never had the little update that gold was added to my inventory (I have no idea how much I had in the first place, so it might have been added and I just didn't realize.
Second, after I followed the mob to the lair, they just stood around staring at one another with their weapons drawn. I did this quest a long time ago in another play through, and have a vague memory of them going storming up there, and then having dialogue about chickening out. I talked to Thonnir and was able to ask him to come along, and doing so caused the other NPCs to sheath their weapon and walk home.
The other weird thing was, when I saw Helgi's ghost after killing Morvath, she opened with 'Mother's calling, it's time for me to sleep now." I had a line of dialogue that I could say, but she said her line and disappeared before I could say anything. I don't remember this bit of the quest at all, but it seems to me that there should be more dialogue than that.
None of these seemed to affect the finishing of the quest when I talked the Jarl, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. Obax (talk) 03:37, 12 January 2015 (GMT)
- What platform were you playing? —MortenOSlash (talk) 04:48, 12 January 2015 (GMT)

- Had this occur for me too. Was on 360. Thonnir sheathed his weapon and walked away outside the cave with the other mob members. Also, I had Helgi vanish after defeating Morvath while she was speaking because I selected the dialogue option. The dialogue option is to tell her that you have avenged her and her mothers death I think, but if you select it while she is talking shes quits and disappears without finishing her sentence. Does not seem to affect quest, but does break the fluidity of the story.. — Unsigned comment by 74.47.174.230 (talk) at 07:18 on 17 October 2015 (UTC)
Easier way to defeat Movarth?[edit]
The first room of Movarth's Lair is a vertical descent with a ramp leading down. In order to get back up the ramp, it's necessary to jump onto a small ledge. Since the AI doesn't know how to jump, you can lure enemies back to the first room and watch them get stuck at the bottom. This should allow you to pelt them with ranged attacks from the top of the ramp.FrozenWolf150 (talk) 05:40, 7 November 2015 (UTC)
Does Hroggar reveal his unconscience?[edit]
I just heard about it, someone says : If you go to the Alvar's house at morning, you can see Alvar and Hroggar talking, and then you can recognize Hroggar already knows Alvar's identity and purpose.(not like his excuse after kill Alvar) But I can't see they talk because they become hostile immediately!. Does anybody see their conversation? --121.170.196.105 17:04, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
- I solve this problem. The dialogue does exist.--121.170.196.105 13:06, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
- For all I know you might be right about this dialogue pointing out that Hroggar involuntarily reveals Alva's vampirism, but your attempt to add it to the Hroggar page was so very far from how the page standards are. It seems your point was lost on one the more experienced editors, who just removed it all.
- If you wish it to be added, I think maybe you should try to explain it on the Hroggar talk page, and let someone more used to the standards and formatting of the pages eventually add it if they agree to it being worth to mention. —MortenOSlash (talk) 16:10, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
Clash with Cleansing Light (Dawnguard)[edit]
I attempted to kill two birds with one stone by doing this quest, having previously been given Movarth's Lair as a target of a Cleansing Light by Gunmar.
When I arrived, I found that this quest obviously takes precedence; the generic Volkihar Master Vampire was disabled. The map marker for the Cleansing Light target was pointing at the floor to the right of the table in the hall you meet Movarth. After completing the quest, I returned quickly to Movarth's Lair: everything was as I left it, apart from the now enabled Volkihar Master Vampire. Who was subsequently disabled, this time permanently. Or at least until the cell resets.
Is this a common thing to happen, or something unique to this combination of quests? Is it worth noting, as unlikely as it is to occur?
Played on PC with all the official and unofficial patches. Piphil (talk) 21:14, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
- This is actually a fix by USKP, Movarth's Lair does not have a boss for that quest according to their log, though so far no problems have been noted with the vampire equivalent, Culling the Beast, which also requires a boss. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 03:06, 13 February 2017 (UTC)
Thonnir's dialogue option before entering cave[edit]
I noticed that when you clear the cave without Thonnir's help and then you come out and talk to him, the dialogue option for him to help you is still available. Also, the ghost does not seem to appear at the end if you skip that dialogue at the beginning. Since the dialogue option is still there, you can still have him pointlessly follow you back into the empty cave. I reloaded from the auto save where I first entered the cave, then I immediately came back out and initiated the normal dialogue with Thonnir and we went in and cleared the cave together. Then the ghost appeared at the end. — Unsigned comment by Grimbold (talk • contribs) at 08:08 on 12 October 2019 (UTC)
Another bug[edit]
I play on PC with mods, but I don't have any mods that modify this quest (or Morthal). After completing the quest (I ran into a few bugs, and I solved them by waiting for 1 hour using the "wait" button) I returned to Morthal, and apparently everyone who was in the mob (Lami, Thonnir etc.) now dislike me. One of the bugs I ran into during the quest had to deal with the people in the mob not saying anything like they are supposed to when arriving at the cave entrance, and simply going back to Morthal after I talk to Thonnir.
Laelette already dead?[edit]
When I got directed to kill Laelette, the marked objective was...her body with Thonnir standing next to it. What on earth happened here?
