Where is Barbas?[edit]
Can someone give better info about where to find him? I've wandered every road that could remotely be considered around Falkreath several times, but I haven't been able to find him. And the console doesn't seem to have a good way to teleport to a specific NPC, even if I have their RefId. 24.224.182.133 17:24, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- There's a man you should talk to in Falkreath, who will ask you to capture Barbas so he can use him as a hunting dog. Once done, Barbas will have a marker that will lead you right to him. He should be along with the road to the west of town; you should be able to see him within seconds of leaving the town.Minor Edits 19:31, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Teleporting Barbas to player location?[edit]
"52535.moveto player" is not working for me (I expected it to work like teleporting Lydia to yourself by using "a2c94.moveto player"). Nevertheless, I can teleport to Barbas with "player.moveto 52535". Is there any way to get him to the player without moving the player to him? — Unsigned comment by 90.136.199.99 (talk) at 14:09 on 27 November 2011
- "prid 52535", "moveto player". He vanished on me within *seconds* of me telling him to wait in the Abandoned House... Aliana 23:14, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
- When using "prid 52535" I get an error "item 52535 not found for parameter ObjectReferenceID". Seems like the ID of Barbas changes.--178.203.104.90 21:01, 9 December 2012 (GMT)
- "52535".moveto player (notice the positioning of the quotes) worked to bring him back to me after he decided to go fight an army of bears for days. — Unsigned comment by 108.244.84.13 (talk) at 04:37 on 1 July 2014 (GMT)

How to find Barbas on PS3[edit]
Activate quest, and a marker will be placed on Barbas. — Unsigned comment by 99.71.125.32 (talk) at 02:10 on 30 November 2011
Vile not trapped in Tamriel[edit]
Vile couldn't manifest far from his shrines, so he was restrained to those areas when he chose to come to Tamriel, but he was still ruling from his plane of Oblivion and wasn't trapped in Tamriel at all. 108.28.34.65 18:44, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
- It is a good idea to actually complete the quest before commenting. Vile’s dialog contradicts this ‘not trapped’ theory. It is because the player’s actions set him free that the player doesn’t get the raw deal normally bestowed by this daedric lord. — Unsigned comment by 68.231.66.67 (talk) at 06:30 on 23 April 2012

- I've completed the quest several times, thank you. What Barbas actually says is that Vile can't manifest very far from his shrines, so if anything he's locked out of Tamriel, not trapped in it. 173.73.159.61 07:40, 24 November 2012 (GMT)
Friends[edit]
You can make Barbas' significantly less annoying if you change Barbas' relationship status to Ally (player.setrelationshiprank 52535 3) He will stop pushing you off ledges and forcing you into corners. This requires console so Xbox and PS3 users are SOL. I'm posting it here to see if anyone else can confirm this — Unsigned comment by 75.80.97.155 (talk) at 05:12 on 1 January 2012
- Update: you cannot prevent him from pushing you in certain circumstance due to the odd physics implementation-- possibly the way Gamebryo uses Havok. Barbas looks like he's scripted to maintain a very short near zero follow distance which causes odd pushing issues on certain terrain. Making him friendly however seems to allow you to "push" him out of the way though; similar to how you can make normal followers move out of your way. — Unsigned comment by 75.80.97.155 (talk) at 00:09 on 2 January 2012
-
- Correction: It is not game physics. It is AI. Use the creation kit to change the AI. The minimum follow radius is set too small (100) for the length of this NPC. AI pack DA03BarbasFollowPlayer. I edited min radius 256, max radius 512 and Barbas is no longer constantly bumping the player. Credit to Arthmoor for suggesting this here:

- Set Barbas's scale to 0.75 or lower (the lower the walking animation will seem more strange),use the command "setscale 0.75". The annoying pushing will perfectly be solved. 203.184.227.125 14:53, 4 September 2021

Stay?[edit]
When Barbas is your follower were does he go when you tell him to stop following you? — Unsigned comment by 67.141.30.146 (talk) at 10:22 on 1 January 2012
- You find him near the statue of Clavicus Vile at Haemar's Shame; its where you found him the first time. — Unsigned comment by 75.80.97.155 (talk) at 00:02 on 2 January 2012
- Personally I followed him to the Vile statue from Falkreath, so it's not where I found him. Secondly, the two times I told him to "stop following me", he doesn't stay in one spot and often just disappears. In my game he didn't go back to the statue like you say. I think in the notes/bugs it should say: "If the player tells Barbas to stop following, he usually takes off running, and you can lose him for good." --D. Gemini 02:23, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
- Not "usually"; even if that's what usually happened to you, not everyone suffers that problem.. I never had a problem like that with Barbas. When I told him to wait, he waited. When I told him to go the shrine, he went to the shrine. No problems besides how incredibly annoying he was. Minor EditsThreats•Evidence 02:36, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
- When I told Barbas to stop following me after beginning the search for the axe he returned to the statue of Clavicus in Haemar's Shame as is written here. So maybe Gemini just experienced a bug. — Unsigned comment by 88.78.47.104 (talk) at 12:53 on 30 September 2012
- Think you might be misremembering, Minor Edits, as the only option (aside from asking about the Rueful Axe) is "Stop following me." When I asked him to stop following, it looked like he intended to stay where I left him in Whiterun. However, when I left and came back, he was gone. Shortly after that, I went back to the Shrine of Clavicus Vile and did not notice him. However, I think he was there and I just didn't see him, because when I later went back a second time and STILL didn't see him, I heard him barking just north of the statue (balcony like area overlooking statue). Name?[edit]
His name seems to be a cut-down version of Barabbas, the prisoner who was pardoned instead of Jesus in the Bible. Certainly it has the right associations for someone hanging out with Clavicus Vile: "Matthew refers to Barabbas only as a "notorious prisoner." Mark and Luke further refer to Barabbas as one involved in a stasis, a riot. John 18:40 refers to Barabbas as a lēstēs ("bandit"), "the word Josephus always employs when talking about Revolutionaries", Robert Eisenman observes" (Wikipedia). — Unsigned comment by 174.6.51.17 (talk) at 18:45 on 28 January 2012
- Sorry, wrong. Author above quotes wikipedia, but didn't even try searching "Barbas". Much better to speculate and make stuff up than to do research, right? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbas.
- "In demonology, Barbas is a demon described in the Ars Goetia. He is described as the Great President of Hell governing thirty-six legions of demons. He answers truly on hidden or secret things, causes and heals diseases, teaches mechanical arts, and changes men into other shapes. He is depicted as a great lion that, under the conjurer's request, changes shape into a man.
- The name Barbas also comes from the Latin "barba", beard, hellebore (a plant used in witchcraft, especially to invoke demons), and also a male name". (96.21.93.154 06:22, 23 January 2013 (GMT))
after done with Barbas you you can't get another animal follower ?[edit]
Even after done with Barbas the game shows you have an animal follower still so you can't get another? Is this really true? How often does this happen? What can it affect later in the game? Is there any way to check if the bug occured or not on the PS3? Please can anyone help me out? Should I not accept Barbas' quest and then leave him outside the cave with Vile shrine in it until I have done all other quests involving animal followers? Any help would be appreciate for any of these questions... Thanks. --D. Gemini 02:27, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
- It's rare. Didn't happen to me, at least. The only detrimental affect is that you will be unable to recruit another animal companion. Minor EditsThreats•Evidence 02:36, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
- One other effect is if you have Hearthfire, every time you come home your child will greet you like you have a dog following you. Pretty much kills any kind of immersion. El Duderino (talk) 05:46, 18 November 2012 (GMT)

Contradictory information?[edit]
The first paragraph says he may sustain enough damage to cause him to flee, after which he will rejoin the fray if healed.
But then under Notes it says he has god mode and cannot be harmed at all in the first place.
Only one of these can be true, so which is it? 97.90.133.120 09:21, 17 September 2012 (GMT)
-
- Yes, his health stays unchanged no matter what. I'm not sure what causes fleeing and returning, but it's not being healed again. I don't know how the information in the comment was gathered. The one about him fleeing if the damage dealed would have killed him if he were not invulnerable. He has a special script, that checks on a hit whether the source is the Rueful Axe and the damage dealer is the player. If yes, the invulnerable flag is cleared. --Alfwyn (talk) 12:20, 1 October 2012 (GMT
Other Dogs?[edit]
This and another page says having Barbas will interfere with having other animal followers but I've had Barbas in combination with both Vigilance and with Meeko along with a follower, a horse and thralls. When I recruited Meeko, Vigilance left the party but Barbas stayed. I got Barbas before I went to Markarth and bought Vigilance, no problem. 173.73.159.61 07:54, 24 November 2012 (GMT)
- It was removed from the other pages already (once to follow duplication guidelines in the style guide, once because the bug was disputed). There's already a
vn=1
in the bug template for that bug which means that only one user has reported the bug and it needs to be verified. I've also gone ahead and tweaked the wording so it doesn't read like it will always happen. — ABCface◥ 15:27, 24 November 2012 (GMT)
barbas didn't become part of the statue[edit]
a weird bug happened where barbas (who i spared) didn't become part of the statue and i think it had something to do with the fact i talked to him during the final interaction. now he just sits around, and on top of that, the statue has vanished -_- weird right? anyone know how to sort this bug, and would it be worth including? it's on 360 btw — Unsigned comment by 58.160.237.234 (talk) at 03:00 on 6 December 2012 (GMT)
Slow motion[edit]
Barbas had been following me at a normal at a normal speed for a dog, but when I went to do the quest, a cornered rat, Barbas started to walk really slowly. Slow as in 5 seconds to step with one paw, not kidding. When I left the ratways he went back to normal. I wonder why. I am on the Xbox so mods are not the problem. Moved from note: Barbas found dead[edit]
Whilst fighting and killing a dragon at Deepwood Redoubt on 360, Barbas' empty corpse was found after the fight - whether he was killed by the dragon or Player is slightly unclear (mostly sure it was not the Player's fault) but probably worth noting that dragons *may* be able to kill him. — Unsigned comment by 114.30.99.195 (talk) at 09:52 on 23 January 2016 (UTC)
- As it is on 360, it is not likely to be a mod, but since no-one has encountered this before, it seems like a one off to me. Is it noteworthy? —MortenOSlash (talk) 15:25, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
- Are we sure it was Barbas and not just a random dog seen from a distance? I can't see how an essential NPC can be found dead in a location he has nothing to do with, and I've never heard of a bug to this effect. I think this is probably just a one-off, so it's not worth noting in my opinion. Zul do onikaanLaan tinvaak 13:49, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

- I just removed one more addition to the notes from the same IP, where the IP warned against having Barbas too close in meleé attacks as he could then die. I believe IP either does not know the difference between Barbas and other dog companions or IP has a faulty installation of Skyrim on her/his 360. As IP seems not to have discovered the talk page yet, it might be difficult to say. —MortenOSlash (talk) 17:26, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

Barbas reported my crime[edit]
I lockpicked whats his names house to investigate the vampire problem in Morthal and i got a bounty for it and i got barbas to thank for that, I already killed the roaming guards in morthal before trying this so no one saw me and the npc's are in bed. — Unsigned comment by PrinceRetro (talk • contribs) at 18:34 on 17 June 2018 (UTC)
Barbas is taking damage from enemies[edit]
And from myself (accidentally of course) I don't know if this is a bug but now barbas can be hurt by enemies and from my attacks but i do it by accident. when enemies hit him he yells like any other dog would when they get hurt. And i was surprised when my chain lightning spell accidentally killed barbas then i had to load from where i was before.
Is he taking damage because of a bug or was the game updated that allowed Barbas to no longer be invincible? — Unsigned comment by 71.220.147.236 (talk) at 18:01 on 26 February 2019 (UTC)
- What version of the game are you playing? Do you have any mods, unofficial patches or Creation Club creations installed that may influence the game? —MortenOSlash (talk) 13:43, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
"Vile! None of that..." is probably not an unused dialogue[edit]
After rejecting Vile's offer to kill Barbas (By selecting "No Deal."), he says "Hrmph. You're no fun at all. Guess I'll have to make my own fun elsewhere. And with the pup back, I'll be restored to my full power. There's a whole world just waiting for me!"
After that I heard Barbas saying, "Vile! None of that - you made a deal, and the mortal stood by it honestly. Now it's your turn to come through."
But I had also activated Barbas by that point so I heard the above line simultaneously along with "Wait a second, there's another option here."
To keep it short, I don't think "Vile! None of that..." is an unused dialogue. Maybe someone else would want to verify this. — Unsigned comment by 103.217.240.53 (talk) at 04:47 on 22 June 2020 (UTC)
