Detailed Walkthrough[edit]
Concordia's camp and Stormhold[edit]
After completing Ruthless Competition, Concordia will ask you to assist her once again.
- "All right, time to get back to work.
We need to figure out how to keep Margus Derius from finding the Golden Skull of Beela-Kaar before we do. The survival of Cyrodilic Collections depends upon it, not to mention Murkmire. Maybe all of Black Marsh!" - Tell me more about the Golden Skull of Beela-Kaar. Why is it so important?
- "Depends on the source, but all the legends indicate that the skull contains powerful magic. Not to mention a curse that could destroy Murkmire. I shudder at the very notion of someone like Margus or the Blackguards getting their hands on it!"
- So how do we stop Margus from finding this cursed skull?
- "We need to follow the trail. Whatever Margus found inside the idol, he's going to need Argonian experts to help him decipher it.
Talk to Jee-Lar. He knows a few local Argonians with knowledge of Murkmire. That's who Margus will seek out as well." - I'll talk to Jee-Lar and we'll see what we can uncover.
- "Jee-Lar's down by the water, working on his boat. He should be able to point you to the Argonians most likely to possess the knowledge that Margus needs.
- Get to them and find out what Margus questioned them about."
- I don't understand. Why do I need to find these Argonians?
- "As much as Margus desires Argonian antiquities, he doesn't really know that much about them. He's going to need help making sense of whatever he found inside the idol. For that, he'll turn to the most knowledgeable Argonians he can find."
- Tell me more about the Golden Skull of Beela-Kar.
- "I just read about this in The Legends of Black Marsh. The skull is a fabled relic said to contain the power of the Argonian sorcerer, Beela-Kaar. According to the book, the skull vibrates with arcane energy and carries a terrible curse."
- Why would anyone want a cursed skull?
- "Cyrodilic Collections wants to find the skull so we can return it to Black Marsh. Perhaps to make it the centerpiece of our proposed museum.
Margus... I'm beginning to think he wants to utilize its power in some kind of arcane ritual."- What kind of arcane ritual?
- "Well, it is a cursed skull, and Beela-Kaar practiced the dark arts, so not a particularly good ritual, I imagine. The legend says the curse spells the doom of Murkmire.
I don't think we can afford to take any chances with this."
- Remind me about you and your organization.
- "Cyrodilic Collections was started by my sister Famia and I. The goal of our society is to find and recover Argonian antiquities that were removed from Black Marsh and return them to the Argonian people."
- And what's in it for you?
- "We have a deep and abiding respect for the Argonian culture. Well, more of a fascination, really.
Plus, every success builds our reputation. That's the key."- The key to what?
- "To fame and fortune! Success garners attention, and attention attracts benefactors. That means more gold to use to equip expeditions and purchase antiquities from collectors.
And eventually, it means we'll have enough gold to open our museum!"
- Who's Margus Derius again?
- "Margus Derius was a member of our society who betrayed our trust. He stole our research and used it to beat us to some choice relics. His true goal appears to be the Golden Skull of Beela-Kaar. With the help of the Blackguards, he might just find it."
- And who are the Blackguards?
- "The Blackguards are a deadly gang of thugs from Black Marsh. The gang consists mostly of Argonians and is rumored to have been formed by escapees from Blackrose Prison.
They're crude, hateful, and have no regard for the sanctity of history!"
Concordia says you can find Jee-Lar nearby, then she wants two of you to ask the local Argonian experts what they know about the Cursed Skull.
- "The cursed skull scares the wind out my sails and that's a fact!
Does Concordia have more work for us to do?" - Concordia wants us to talk to local Argonians with knowledge of antiquities from Murkmire.
- "Why didn't I think of that? The Blackguards are sure to harass anyone they think can help them decipher the clues that lead to the cursed skull!
I can think of five or six knowledgeable Argonians right here in Shadowfen!" - How do we find these Argonians so we can check on them?
- "Here. You check on the Argonians on this list and I'll go check on a few others. Meet me back here after you're done and we can compare notes.
Just be careful. If the Blackguards found them, there's a good chance they're keeping an eye on them."
Three Argonian experts[edit]
You need to search for three Argonian experts across Shadowfen. Unfortunately, the Blackguards have gotten to them all first, and you may have to fight your way past a couple of Blackguards to talk to them. They are collectively to be found in the wilderness in the center, south and southeast of Shadowfen.
Taxatl[edit]
Taxatl is an Argonian knowledgeable on Murkmire who is being held by the Blackguards to examine relics for them. You'll find her at a Blackguard camp outside of Sunscale Strand.
- "Please, I've told you everything I know about the woodcut you showed me. You can let me go now, right? I did what you asked."
- I'm not one of the Blackguards. I need you to tell me what you told them.
- "You're not... oh no, if they see you talking to me...
You have to leave. Now! I want nothing more to do with Margus Derius or the Skull of Beela-Kaar!" - If you don't help me, they're going to get their hands on the cursed skull.
- "All the more reason for me to run as far from this place as I possibly can. I know how powerful cursed Argonian relics can be!
If only I had enough gold for the voyage. My poor feet can only carry me so far, you know." - There must be something you can tell me.
- "They showed me a woodcut that contained ancient Argonian symbols. I could read some of them. They described a ritual to turn meditation cylinders into keys.
A contribution to my travel fund might help me remember more..."- Is this enough to spark your memory? [Leveled ]
- "I appreciate the compensation.
Now listen. Two things. The meditation cylinders are hidden on an island called Norg-Tzel, but I have no idea where that is. Second, the Blackguards are preparing a ship on the river near Deep Graves to go find them."
- "I appreciate the compensation.
- I'm not going to pay you to help me.
- Is this enough to spark your memory? [Leveled ]
If you turn down the offer and then speak to her again:
- "The Blackroses have me under their thumb. If I step out of line, they'll press down. I don't have enough money to pay them off."
If spoken to again she'll say: "I've said as much as I dare. Please, go away before the Blackguards see you!"
Dus-Geet[edit]
Dus-Geet is an Argonian knowledgeable about Murkmire who has been taken prisoner by the Blackguards for that very reason. You'll find her warming by a campfire on a hill east of Hissmir.
- "If you're another one of those Blackguards—and that's the way to pronounce it, not "Black Guards" like that thug insisted it was—then my answer is the same. I've deciphered as much of the woodcut as I can.
Now leave me alone." - I'm not one of the Blackguards. I'm trying to stop them from finding the cursed skull.
- "That's rather courageous of you. Few willingly oppose the Blackguards.
Well, you'll need to hurry. I already interpreted the portion of the woodcut that refers to the ritual. Their leader, Margus, knows how to recover the cursed skull." - And how is Margus going to do that?
- "By performing the ritual exactly as the woodcut described it. I warned him it was dangerous. One misstep and the spell will consume him!
Of course, he needs ritual objects to focus the spell. I couldn't decipher that section of the woodcut, though." - Is there anything else you can tell me that would help me stop him?
- "Look, I have a family. If the Blackguards even suspect that I told you this much, they'll make them disappear.
No, no. I have nothing else to say on this matter."- [Persuade] If you help me stop them, then you won't have to worry about the safety of your family.
- "Fair point. I heard the Blackguards talking. They mentioned they're preparing an expedition to retrieve the ritual objects. Said their ship was moored near Deep Graves, along the river.
If they find them and unleash the curse, Murkmire is doomed."
- "Fair point. I heard the Blackguards talking. They mentioned they're preparing an expedition to retrieve the ritual objects. Said their ship was moored near Deep Graves, along the river.
- I understand. I'll leave you alone now.
- "I suppose I should be thankful for that. Look, the curse of Beela-Kaar is a terrible thing. He hated his fellow Argonians. If Margus unleashes the power of the curse, all of Murkmire will be destroyed!
I hope you do stop him. I hope so very much."
- "I suppose I should be thankful for that. Look, the curse of Beela-Kaar is a terrible thing. He hated his fellow Argonians. If Margus unleashes the power of the curse, all of Murkmire will be destroyed!
- [Persuade] If you help me stop them, then you won't have to worry about the safety of your family.
If spoken to again she'll say: "Look, I told you as much as I dare. Now go away before the Blackguards see you speaking to me. Even this pitiful life is better than no life at all."
Peesha[edit]
Peesha is an Argonian held by the Blackguards for his knowledge of Murkmire. You'll find him sitting outside a tent of a makeshift Blackguard camp not far from the Hatching Pools.
- "Yes, yes, I'm still here. Where could I go, what with your thugs watching me like horned owls regarding a branch full of tree slugs.
So, what Argonian antiquity do you want me to examine this time?" - I'm not one of the Blackguards, but I need to know what you told them.
- "Not a Blackguard? Then why should I tell you anything? Unless you're one of those thorns in their sides that their leader complained about.
Are you one of them? Are you a thorn in the Blackguards' side?" - I'm working with Cyrodilic Collections, if that's what you're asking.
- "Then I'll tell you what I told their leader. The woodcut they found inside the nightmare idol describes a ritual, but all I could decipher was the sacred location where it must be performed. Norg-Tzel. In ancient Argonian, it means "forbidden place.""
- You couldn't determine anything else about the ritual?
- "This is just a guess, but I think the ritual unlocks the hiding place of the Golden Skull of Beela-Kar. And once Margus gains the cursed skull, he can summon forth the power of the mad sorcerer. Power enough, the legends say, to destroy Murkmire."
Speaking to him after this, he'll only say:
- "I have nothing more to tell you. You should leave now before the Blackguards notice you. Or worse, they notice you talking to me."
Three pieces of a map[edit]
Once you have completed interviewing your list of Argonians, Jee-Lar can be spoken to about his findings and he also expresses shock at the situation for Argonians living outside Murkmire.
- "Life here is so very different from the way things work in Murkmire. I never realized how many Argonians have such a terrible existence. And now the Blackguards are just making things worse!
Were you able to talk to the Argonians I suggested?" - Yes. The Blackguards forced them to decipher a woodcut Margus found inside the nightmare idol.
- "The Argonians I talked to said the same thing. Apparently the woodcut describes some sort of ritual that will allow Margus to either find or retrieve the cursed skull.
What did the Argonians you talked to have to say on the subject?" - The ritual involves meditation cylinders and must be performed on an island called Norg-Tzel.
- "That's interesting. Very interesting! Those words mean "the forbidden place" in the language of Murkmire.
I also learned that the Blackguards are preparing to launch an expedition to find this island so Margus can perform the ritual." - The Argonians I spoke to said something similar.
- "We need to find that ship! One of the Argonians told me that only three Blackguards know the location, but as a precaution they each carry one-third of a map. They must work together to reach the ship.
You find two of them and I'll get the third."
Speaking to him again, he'll say:
- "I marked locations on your map. That's where you can find two of the Blackguards that carry the maps that reveal where the expedition ship is moored. I'll get the third map piece, the we can meet back here and tell Concordia what we uncovered."
Jee-Lar sends you off to search for two pieces of a map and says that he will find the third piece. The two pieces you end up chasing have both ended up in places where their Blackguard owners have found things too hot to handle. One has been killed by the slavers of the Slaver Camp not far north of Chid-Moska Ruins. This Slaver Camp is technically a group World Event, which is dangerous to handle alone. However you don't have to fight the boss, as the map piece (and the bodies of two Blackguards) are on the edge of the camp, and can be approached fairly easily in stealth. The second piece you have to chase lies within Gandranen Ruins, where the Blackguards have fallen foul of its Fenlord.
Deep Graves[edit]
Once you have retrieved the map pieces which show where the Blackguard ship is, you need to return to Stormhold to talk to Concordia for her to reassemble them.
- "Jee-Lar brought me up to speed on what the Argonians revealed to you. He also gave me part of a map. Were you able to find the other two pieces?"
- I found these pieces of a map.
- "Let me take a look. I'm pretty good at these sorts of puzzles.
- This goes here...that goes there...and we have a complete map! Without a place to start, however, this could be anywhere in southern Shadowfen. I wish we had more time."
- What's the rush?
- "Well, according to what the Argonians told you, Margus knows the ritual, knows where to find the meditation cylinders, and knows the location of the forbidden island. We're running out of time.
- You need to use this map to find the Blackguards' ship."
- One of the Argonians mentioned the ship was moored near Deep Graves.
- "That makes the area you need to search considerably smaller!
- Find that ship and stop Margus before he completes the ritual that unleashes the curse. I'd really rather not see Murkmire destroyed, thank you very much!"
Fortunately, Jee-Lar has already found the third piece of the map and brought it back with him. Now, Concordia has all three pieces of the map. She can't make heads or tails of them, but your own previous research from the captured Argonians works together with the map pieces to point to a Blackguard expedition near Deep Graves, right on the southern edge of Shadowfen. The boat is some way south of Deep Graves, in close proximity to a skyshard and the Atronach Mundus Stone When you get to the boat, you'll find that Jee-Lar got there first. He asks you to convince the pilot to take you there.
- "Good, good, you're here! It looks like Margus has already departed for the island, but the Blackguards are preparing to send back-up.
We need to sneak onto the expedition ship and use it to take us to Norg-Tzel. - But we don't know where the island is located.
- "No, but the ship's pilot knows the way! We just need to board that vessel and convince the pilot to help us.
I doubt the Blackguards inspire much loyalty in their hirelings." - All right. Let's go convince the ship's pilot to take us to Norg-Tzel.
If spoken again, he'll say:
- "Go on, go on. Fast-fast! I'll meet you on the ship."
Pilot Hasuq is the Redguard captaining the ship the Blackguards use to get to and from Shadowfen. If he is spoken to before speaking to Jee-Lar:
- "I'm just the hired help! Don't hurt me!"
When you speak to him to convince him to take you to Norg-Tzel:
- "Don't hurt me! I'll do whatever you say!"
- Good. Can you take us to the island called Norg-Tzel?
- "You want to go to where? You know that island is forbidden, right? Oh, this will be the end of us! Your weapons make a persuasive point though. Just know that the place is full of Blackguards!"
- I'm ready to go.
Fortunately, the poor man doesn't need much convincing, as the Blackguards do not inspire much loyalty in their followers. He takes you to Norg-Tzel without any issue, which is fortunate, as his boat is the only way there and back.
Norg-Tzel[edit]
The island itself is comparatively small, filled with typical Black Marsh wildlife. There are four Blackguard dig sites which you have the option of investigating. Three of them are guarded by Blackguards, with a set of peremptory instructions (One, Two and Three) demanding that they find a "meditation cylinder" - which they've already found. The Blackguards at the fourth dig site are already dead, having been killed by a Bog Blight, although the meditation cylinder they were evidently seeking is also already gone. Near their corpses is a book, The Curse of Beela-Kaar.
A small xanmeer is at the northern end of the island. Fight your way through the tunnels, past Blackguards, Bog Blights, Swarming Zombies, and a monster called Yakh-Xul the Destroyer, until you reach the entrance to the Ritual Chamber. Within this chamber, Margus Derius is killed by his own ritual: after which you will have to disengage the four Ritual Cylinders, which came from the four dig sites you found earlier. Each cylinder will summon an increasing number of Bog Blights and Swarming Zombies in waves before you can disengage it. Disengaging the fourth cylinder releases a powerful but slow creature: the Guardian of the Cursed Skull. You must defeat the Guardian to gain access to the Golden Skull's chamber, although if you're particularly stealthy you can try sneaking past him instead. Grab the skull and head out through the shortcut.
Once on the island of Norg-Tzel, Jee-Lar will let you take the lead:
- Jee-Lar: "So this is Norg-Tzel, the forbidden island! We need to find Margus and the Blackguards!"
When you come across one of the Blackguards' Dig Sites, he will comment on all of them:
- Jee-Lar: "That's an Argonian reliquary! It must have contained one of the cylinders for the ritual!"
- Jee-Lar: "Another Argonian reliquary! From the looks of it, it was dug up fairly recently."
- Jee-Lar: "That's a bog-blight! Please be careful-careful, my friend!"
- Jee-Lar: "Another Argonian reliquary. Margus may have enough cylinders to conduct the ritual now."
Once you reach the entrance to the xanmeer where Margus is:
- Jee-Lar: "A xanmeer! That's the perfect place for Margus to perform his ritual."
- "We should enter the xanmeer and stop Margus before he unleashes the curse of Beela-Kaar!"
When you enter the xanmeer it becomes clear that Margus has already begun the ritual.
- Jee-Lar: "Quick-quick! Margus has started the ritual!"
- "You need to stop that ritual and that's a fact!"
He can be spoken to at this point to ask for his advice on what to do once you reach the ritual chamber.
- "See those pedestals down there? How the cylinders taken from the reliquaries are set upon them? Margus is using them to focus his ritual!
You might be able to disrupt the ritual if you turn the cylinders so they recede into the pedestals."
As you move through the xanmeer Margus Derius can be heard conducting the ritual:
- Margus Derius: "Beela-Kaar, hear my words!"
- Margus Derius: "Give me your power!"
- Margus Derius: "Hear my words and reveal your hiding place!"
Once you reach the ritual chamber, the following will happen:
- Jee-Lar: "Disengage the cylinders! That should stop the ritual!"
- Margus Derius: "Stay back!"
- "I need to maintain my concentration!"
Margus loses his concentration and explodes into bloody chunks, then hordes of Argonian undead will start emerge from the water pools. Once some of them are killed:
- Jee-Lar: "Look-look! Killing those monster grants access to the ritual cylinders!"
As more cylinders are disengaged:
- Jee-Lar: "Each cylinder you disengage stops another part of the ritual. I think."
- Jee-Lar: "That did it! One more cylinder and the rest of the energy should dissipate."
When the chamber opens:
- Jee-Lar: "That chamber, there it is! Deal with the guardian and grab the skull!"
Once you are outside, Jee-Lar will have reached the boat, though he is worn out:
- "Go on, go on. Fast-fast! I'll meet you on the ship."
Speak to Pilot Hasuq:
- "What's going on? Do you want me to take you back to Shadowfen now?'
- I'm ready to return to Shadowfen now.
- "After I pilot the ship back to Shadowfen, I think I'll set sail for a place as far from Murkmire and the Blackguards as I can manage.
I wonder what lies beyond the edge of the map, west of Summerset?"
When you are back to Shadowfen and speak to Jee-Lar again, he'll respond:
- "Back in Murkmire, I always felt like I was fighting the current. Trying to force my way upstream instead of going with the flow.
Since joining Cyrodilic Collections, though, my life has a purpose. It reminds me of warm mud oozing between my toes!"
The boat's pilot will return you directly to Stormhold where you can talk to Concordia Mercius for your reward: a large amount of gold, the collectible Murkmire Grave Stake, and the ability to take daily fetch-quests from Jee-Lar, who is conveniently standing near Stormhold's Wayshrine.
- "Welcome back, my friend. Were you and Jee-Lar successful? Were you able to stop Margus? And what of the cursed skull? Did you see it?
Tell me, is the threat to Murkmire behind us now?" - We found Margus in a xanmeer on the island of Norg-Tzel. The ritual consumed him.
- "That's unfortunate, but the Argonians warned us that the ritual was dangerous. At least Cyrodilic Collections won't have to worry about Margus Derius any more.
- But you stopped the ritual? Margus wasn't able to release the curse on Murkmire, right?"
- I don't think the curse was released, but the ritual did reveal the skull's hiding place.
- "Well, I think we'd know if Beela-Kaar's curse had been unleashed. At the very least, my sister Famia would have sent word. I'm sure she'd notice if Murkmire was destroyed around her.
Did you get to see the skull? Is it really made of solid gold?" - Here's the golden skull. You should take it for safekeeping.
- "Good job, my friend! I'll send the skull to my sister in Murkmire. She'll make sure it's safe.
If you ever get out that way, Famia would love to meet you. And Cyrodilic Collections can always use your help. For now, take this with my thanks."
Once The Cursed Skull has been completed, when Concordia is spoken to again she will advise you go help Jee-Lar with preparing for the next expedition. She'll randomly give you one of the following three dialogues:
- "Remember the name of Cyrodilic Collections! We're going to return Argonian history to Murkmire. You have my promise on that.
- In the meantime, could you help Jee-Lar? He's having some issues equipping our next expedition."
or
- "Cyrodilic Collections thanks you for your efforts on our behalf. I hope we count on your continued assistance as we prepare for our expeditions to Murkmire.
Talk to Jee-Lar and I'm sure he can find something for you to help with."
or
- "Jee-Lar has been tirelessly working on procuring resources for our expeditions into Murkmire. I really don't know what Cyrodilic Collections would do without him!
If you would, you might offer him some assistance."
Bugs[edit]
- It's possible that the Cursed Skull will clip through the pedestal and end up inside it making it impossible to select.
- Logging off and back on might reset the skull on top of the pedestal without sending you back to the beginning of the dungeon.
- Going back through the door into the Xanmeer and killing monsters that may have been bypassed on the way in, might also resolve the issue.
