A Crystal Fang

When you first encounter Bastian Hallix, you will learn he was knocked out and tied up by Tenarei because they were looking for the same person. You can accompany Bastian into the Deepscorn Hollow, where you will quickly discover the presence the Unmakers cult, dedicated to Sithis. While questioning a cultist, you find out that Tenarei is being sacrificed to the "Fangs of Sithis". At this point, you and Bastian will split up while you go ahead to rescue Tenarei.

When you enter the next room, Tenarai Vels can be found chained to a pillar while three red crystals, the "Fangs" drain her:

Tenarei Vels: "Help! Break these crystals! Please, they're killing me!"

Once you break the crystals, Tenarei will be freed as hobbles to the door leading to the Deepscorn Caves:

Tenarei Vels: "Praise Vehk! Thank you, stranger. Let's talk. Somewhere safer."

Following her, you will find Tenarei at a small camp within the tunnel:

Tenarei Vels: "Those idiots were going to sacrifice me to Sithis!"

Speak with Tenarai to see what she knows. She will offer to help you find Quistley Sivelle.

"Ugh, my skin still feels like I've got a thousand tiny spiders biting me. That was horrible.
Oh, and thank you. I don't know what someone like you is doing here, but I won't argue with providence."
I'm helping Bastian Hallix find his foster brother.
"Ah, the dutiful and not terribly clever mage. I'll bet he's angry with me.
I took care not to inflict any permanent damage on him. And I fully intended to set him free just as soon as I finish here. It's business, not personal."
I freed Bastian and found your contract with Larz-Tul.
"Then you understand my predicament. I need Silvelle if I want Larz-Tul off my back, but it's not worth getting myself killed over. Help me get out of here, and I'll help you.
I got a look at a map, so I think I know where you can find Silvelle."
Very well. Let's go. (Progresses Quest)
What do you know about this place?
"Not much. Larz-Tul suspected that Quistley was hiding out in a smuggler's cave on the coast. I thought I'd have to check them all. Then I ran into your friend Bastian.
I knew there was something off about the smuggler story, though. It didn't fit."
How much of a debt does Quistley Silvelle owe this Larz-Tul?
"He must be in deep, if Larz-Tul is willing to write off what I owe to get his claws on Quistley. Too bad for him, but it's a chance for me to get out of a bad situation.
Larz-Tul makes a good living from other people's mistakes. Or desperation."
How did you end up in debt to Larz-Tul?
"I borrowed gold against imagined winnings, like every gambler ever.
You ask a lot of questions. Not to be rude, but I'd really rather find Quistley and get out of here. These cultists already tried to sacrifice me once, after all."
You said something about a map?
"I found notes left behind by some unfortunate scholar. He'd apparently come here to make a survey of the ruins.
I hope he had the good sense to retreat when he found fresh evidence of a cult presence. More likely, he came to a bad end."
Did you see anything about a chamber called the Fane of Scorn?
"I did. It's all the way down at the end of this maze, naturally. The scholar's notes hinted that it's an abandoned temple, once dedicated to Sithis.
Well, probably not abandoned now."

Tenarei will now become your follower and accompany you in your search:

Tenarei Vels: "Good. I saw a rough map of this place before I got caught, so I think I know where to go."

If you speak to her during this:

"I thought I'd slip in, knock out a smuggler or two, grab this Quistley fellow and be back in Leyawiin in time for dinner. No such luck. I run into principled competition and deluded cultists praying to Sithis."
What do you know about this place? (Repeats above questions)

She will also make conversation as you move through the cave:

Tenarei Vels: "I'll keep out of your way if we run into more cultists. After that ritual I'm in no condition for a fight."
Tenarei Vels: "The cultists definitely go on and on about Sithis."

At the end of the path, you will reach a chamber with no apparent exit. Tenarei runs ahead into the center of the room and looks around frustrated, noting the imprisoned vampire:

Tenarei Vels: "Damn. A dead end and a vampire in a cage. This isn't terribly helpful."
Tenarei Vels: "Maybe the map showed a passage that isn't here?"

You have an option of talking to Tenarei before asking the vampire what he knows:

"I would have sworn the map I saw showed a passage here. Unless … could it be a hidden passage?
I'll look around a bit. Why don't you see if the vampire knows anything?"
What do you think the vampire knows?
"If he's been here long enough, he must have seen cultists coming or going through any hidden passages. But be careful with him.
I don't trust vampires."

If the player is a vampire:

You seem willing to trust me.
"You're an exception to my rule. You saved me once already today. And you haven't taken advantage of the fact that those crystals left me weak as a kitten.
I suppose there are vampires and there are vampires."

If the player is not a vampire:

The map you saw might have been inaccurate.
"Perhaps, but I'd rather not fight my way through half the cult to get to Quistley Silvelle. If there's a passage here it could save us quite a lot of trouble.
Get in, get what you need, then get out. That's how I prefer to do things."
I'll talk to the vampire.

After speaking with Tenarei, Greywyn will chime in that he does indeed know about a hidden passage. You can then talk to him, asking what he knows. Greywyn will readily tell you:

Tenarei Vels: "Huh. Surprisingly helpful."

Once you reveal the lever to the hidden door, Greywyn will call out to you:

Greywyn Blenwyth: "Wait! Would you do me a favor in return?"

Speaking with Tenarei before returning to Greywyn:

"I think we would have been fine without the vampire's help. He must have been caged up for a reason, right?"

You have the option of hearing out Greywyn, who wants to you to free him. You can choose either choice. Afterwards, you can break the conspicuous crate, revealing the hidden lever:

"A hidden switch and a concealed passage? Hmm. I wonder if these fools have a secret handshake, too.
Well, try the switch. It should take us to the inner sanctum. The Fane of Boring, or whatever fancy name they gave it."

Pulling the lever, the door will be revealed:

Tenarei Vels: "Ha! I knew it. I never grow tired of being correct."
<Tenerei goes through the hidden passage.>

On the other side, you can follow Tenarei as she runs up the hidden passage:

Tenarei Vels: "This should take us right to the cult's hidden temple. Come on!"

At the end of the passage, Tenarei will wait and ask to talk to you:

Tenarei Vels: "Hold up a moment, before we go on. I've been thinking."

Speak with Tenarei to hear her thoughts:

"I stumbled headlong into a bad situation once already. I do try to learn from my mistakes.
I've been thinking. There's a good chance we won't find Quistley Silvelle alive."
happens if you return empty-handed?
"Nothing good. I wouldn't go so far as to say that it comes down to bringing Quistley in or taking his place, but it's close. I really need to be free of Larz-Tul.
I barely persuaded him to give me this chance. I won't get another one."
What do you suggest, then?
"This may sound ghoulish, but … if Quistley is dead, I'd like his signet ring. It's big, gold, and set with rubies.
If I bring it back to Larz-Tul, it will show that I held up my end of our bargain. And he would take it in payment of my debt."
We need to locate Quistley first. Alive or dead.

At this, Tenarei will hear someone running up behind you. It is Bastian:

Tenarei Vels: "Someone's coming!"
Bastian Hallix: "There you are! I'm afraid I wasted my time on that cultist—he knew nothing. Glad I caught up to you."
<Bastian notices Tenarei.>
Bastian Hallix: "Oh. I see you found that … that … Tenarei. Watch your back, friend."

Speaking with Tenarei before talking to Bastian:

"Try to remember not to kill Quistley Silvelle. If he's wearing cultist robes and singing the praises of Sithis, it might be tempting. But he's somewhat more useful to me alive than dead."
If we find Quistley alive, don't do anything rash.
"Knock a gullible stranger over the head one time and earn mistrust for life, eh? I took advantage of an opportunity.
You know we can't both leave with Quistley. I'll duel for him if I have to. I'm very good with my daggers."
No duels. Let's just find Quistley and then we can figure out what to do.
"My, ever the optimistic one, aren't you? Very well, I agree that it's pointless to continue this argument until we have Quistley Silvelle in hand. Or his corpse.
But Bastian should know that my daggers aren't just a fashion accessory."

After speaking with Bastian you will learn that the Daughter of Sithis probably targeted Quistley because of the family wealth. He will agree to momentarily work with Tenarei as she knows the location of the Fane of Scorn, where Quistley and the Daughter of Sithis should be. Tenarei will then "apologize":

Bastian Hallix: "You're not even going to apologize, are you?"
Tenarei Vels: "I'm sorry?"
Bastian Hallix: "Just keep your distance from Quistley. He's my responsibility."

Speaking with Tenarei again before heading into the Temple of Sithis:

"I suppose we shouldn't keep the Daughter of Sithis waiting."
If we find Quistley alive, don't do anything rash. (Repeats above dialogue)

Eventually you reach the Fane of Scorn, Lalais, Daughter of Sithis will be waiting for you. You will also find that Quistley Sivelle is still alive, though he isn't happy to see you at all:

Bastian Hallix: "Quistley!"
Quistley Silvelle: "Bastian? What are you doing here? Go away!"
Quistley Silvelle: "I'll just … oh dear. I'll get out of the way!"
<Quistley runs through the door.>
Tenarei Vels: "I'm no use in a fight right now, I'll keep back."

Before you fight Lalais:

"I'm not sure that idiot actually wants to be rescued.
I suppose I only really need his finger."

After you have slain Lalais, Bastian will be annoyed and wastes no time in nabbing Quistley, running into the Private Chamber with Tenarei following. Once inside the chamber, you will find Quistley arguing with Bastian as Tenarei watches on:

Quistley Silvelle: "How dare you! Lalais would never have hurt me. She said so!"
Tenarei Vels: "<snort laugh>"
Bastian Hallix: "She murders people, you … you … idiot. You were probably next."
Quistley Silvelle: "I'm not talking to you, Bastian. Nor to that rude Dark Elf that just laughed at me."

Tenarei mental image of Quistley turns out to be accurate. She suggests you speak with Quistley and Bastian as she thinks of possible compromise:

"Quistley turns out to be exactly what I expected. Imagine my surprise.
Talk to him and Bastian for a moment. I need to think about how we can resolve our little impasse."

After you have spoken with Quistley, Tenarei has an idea and further explains her situation with Larz-Tul:

"Bastian doesn't seem very fond of Quistley. I can't imagine why.
We compared notes while you were talking with that simpering idiot. Bastian said he might have an idea that would solve things for both of us."
You don't want to deliver Quistley to Larz-Tul?
"Years ago, I lost everything trying to get my brother out of a fishy trading scheme. Larz-Tul offered to help me. I'm still paying for it.
It would be grand to be done with Larz-Tul and to pull one over on him at the same time."
That sounds risky.
"If Bastian's willing to work with me—and perhaps forget about the knocked-out and tied-up business—I think we might have room for a compromise."
I'll speak to him and see what he's thinking.

Speaking with Tenarei again:

"I'm not proud of what I've done to work off my own debts. I'm loath to admit it, but nothing good happens if I drag Quistley back to Larz-Tul."

If you spoken to Bastian and exit out of the quest completion conversation before you turn it in, you can speak to Tenarei: "Bastian isn't wrong. There's a good chance that Larz-Tul decides to make an example out of Quistley. It's not entirely about the gold—a crime boss can't afford to look weak."

Talking with Bastian, he will explain his idea. Tenarei brings Quistley's signet ring to Larz-Tul to pay the debt, while Quistley is shipped home in secret. With the quest completed, you can witness Tenerai and Bastian put the plan in motion, Quistley gets no say in it:

Bastian Hallix: "What do you think, Tenarei? Are you willing to give it a try?"
Tenarei Vels: "I'll need to bring Larz-Tul proof of Quistley's demise."
Bastian Hallix: "What kind of proof would you need?"
Quistley Silvelle: "I'm clearly not dead."
Tenarei Vels: "If I bring Quistley's signet ring to Larz-Tul, he'll believe me."
Bastian Hallix: "That's what I was thinking. I'll tell the Silvelles that Quistley sold the ring to pay his debt."
Quistley Silvelle: "I'm right here!"
Tenarei Vels: "That ring should work. It might even cover most of Quistley's debt."
Quistley Silvelle: "What? My ring? I'm not giving you a damn thing! Bastian, keep that woman away from me!"
<Bastian punches out Quistley, takes the ring and gives it to Tenarei.>
Bastian Hallix: "Here you go. I'll make sure Quistley understands to stay away from Blackwood."
Tenarei Vels: "Thank you. This should clear my account with Larz-Tul. And perhaps clear yours with this ingrate and his family, too."
Bastian Hallix: "We should leave this place. I'll see Quistley on his way when he comes around."

Speaking with Tenarei afterwards:

"I owe you my thanks. And I suppose I should thank Bastian as well. I have a feeling he wouldn't have left me in the cult's hands even after I gave him every reason to.
I truly am sorry for sapping him over the head and leaving him tied up."

Heroes of Blackwood[edit]

Tenarei will attend the celebrations in Gideon if you previously helped her out. Speaking with her, she will explain how it has been going:

"It seems like you've been rather busy! I heard you would be here today, so I thought I'd stop by. I finally paid off my debt to Larz-Tul, thanks to you. I'm free!
Never thought I'd be able to say that again."
Where will you go now, Tenarei?
"Home, I think. It turns out that there were some wealthy people in Leyawiin willing to pay to keep their relatives' involvement with the Cult of the Unmaker from coming to light.
I made out like a bandit! Now I can pay off my family's debts, too."
