History[edit]
Little is known of Guthrag Stone-Talker's past. He was born in the late 9th Century of the First Era, and eventually rose to prominence as a diplomat. Renowned for his compelling oratory, he successfully postponed the Siege of Orsinium for over a decade.[1] However, the unavoidable siege began in 1E 950,[2] aligning with the time of his demise on the journey to Daggerfall.[1]
Over the years, Guthrag's Mask made notable appearances throughout Orcish history. According to legends, the mask possessed the ability to transform an Orc's appearance into something more appealing to onlookers. However, greater powers were sometimes attributed to the mask. Ambassadors and spies utilized Guthrag's Mask for centuries to advance the Orsimer cause in foreign lands. The final recorded possessor of the mask was the enigmatic Chief's Eye of Fharun Stronghold. The mask's power was shattered when an arrow pierced it, driving into the forehead of the master spy. Even without its magical abilities, the mask retained its significance as an item of historical importance.[1][3]
As of 2E 582, Guthrag Stone-Talker was regarded as the most renowned diplomat in Orcish history,[1] and the legendary mask associated with him became the sought-after subject for museum inquiries. Curator Umutha of the House of Orsimer Glories embarked on a quest to retrieve the enchanted mask. The mask was discovered by an adventurer hired by the curator, perched atop a watchtower east of Fharun Stronghold. Eventually, it was safely delivered to a museum for public display.[3][4][5]
