Drain Attribute, M points for D seconds
Temporarily lowers one of the target's attributes by M points for D seconds. Derived attributes such as Fatigue, Magicka, and Encumbrance will be recalculated if applicable. After the spell expires, the attribute will be raised by the same number of points, recalculating any derived attributes affected.
Alchemy Ingredients[edit]
The following alchemy ingredients will cause a Drain Attribute effect if mixed in a potion:
- Drain Agility
- Drain Endurance
- Drain Intelligence
- Drain Luck
- Drain Personality
- Drain Speed
- Drain Strength
- Drain Willpower
* These are first-effect ingredients, so you will experience the effect by eating them raw as well.
Related Effects[edit]
- Absorb Attribute, Damage Attribute
- Fortify Attribute, Restore Attribute
- Drain Fatigue, Drain Health, Drain Magicka, Drain Skill
Useful Interactions[edit]
- Drain Intelligence can effectively magnify some Magicka-related effects, as the proportion of max Magicka currently available will be preserved when draining/restoring Intelligence. If Intelligence hits zero, the behavior is dependent on the engine and patches used; see the Bugs section. Tested under OpenMW.
- Be careful to account for any racial Weakness to Magicka or Resist Magicka if testing on yourself. In the latter case, note that Drain Intelligence can be added multiple times to the same spell in case 100 points is not enough given your level of Intelligence and Magicka resistance.
- Drain Intelligence on Self coupled with ordinary mana-restoration techniques such as Restore Magicka and Spell Absorption will effectively magnify their effects on expiration of the Drain effect.
- Normally, Drain Magicka X pts for 1 sec on Self will drain your Magicka down to a minimum of zero, then restore the full nominal amount, meaning that you will end with at least X Magicka available. Since Drain Magicka cannot be added to the same spell twice, normally a single spell is limited to bumping your current Magicka up to 100 pts. Drain Magicka + Drain Intelligence magnifies the amount of Magicka you can end up with, but will not restore you to above your maximum Magicka.
- Drain Intelligence + Fortify Magicka on Self can restore your available Magicka as well as fortify it above your maximum Magicka available without the extra fully disappearing on expiration.
- Drain Intelligence + Damage Magicka on enemies may more effectively deplete their Magicka pool; however, without knowledge of the target's starting Intelligence or the patch to the 0-Intelligence behavior, this may risk actually restoring their Magicka pool.
- Similarly, Drain Strength, Willpower, Agility, and Endurance can magnify Fatigue-related effects, and allow current Fatigue to exceed max Fatigue "permanently" (until the excess Fatigue is used or removed via spell effects).
Bugs[edit]
- If you are under the effect of a Fortify Attribute, and are then hit with a Drain effect for the same attribute, then when the Drain expires, the attribute will not return to its former value, making the Drain behave more like a Damage Attribute. The only way to solve this is to remove whatever was causing the Fortify effect, and then apply a Restore Attribute effect. You may then put the Fortify effect back on to be returned to your former attribute value.
- The Morrowind Code Patch fixes this bug.
- OpenMW fixes this bug.
- You can't create potions with more than one Drain Attribute effect. The effect that appears first is the one that the potion will have.
- The Morrowind Code Patch fixes this bug.
- If you drain your own Intelligence to zero, your magicka will be fully replenished when the effect ends. This can be especially useful for characters born under the sign of the Atronach, although some might consider this cheating.
